Turn on your heating system now, so you're ready when the temps drop later.

Man adjusting thermostat

Most people don't think about their heating system when it's still warm out. The best time to check your heating system is before you need it to turn on. It pays to plan ahead and test your heating system in the early fall months. Doing so now will make sure that it's ready to turn on when the cold weather hits. It also could prevent any potential headaches with emergency repairs.

Testing your heating system

Here are a few quick and easy steps, you can do to test your heating system to ensure that it is functioning safely and efficiently.

  • Set your thermostat to heat instead of cool.
  • Test your thermostat. Turn the temperature up 5-10 degrees to make sure the heat kicks on. If it seems like it's not working with your furnace, put in fresh batteries. If that doesn't help, consider replacing your thermostat.
  • Make sure the flue and all vents are open.
  • Change the air filter.
  • Once your furnace is on, take notice of any strange smells and odd sounds.
  • Don't forget to test or replace batteries in your carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Move everything (especially flammable items) away from your furnace.
  • Make sure to move large furniture away from vents and air ducts it may be blocking.

Mark your calendar now and set a reminder to test your heating system in the early fall months every year. You will ensure that your system is ready to heat your home as soon as you need it and enjoy a worry-free winter.
